Martin Krusche und Matthias Marschik erinnern sich an den kurzen Sommer des Automobils in den Seventies, als sich schon fast alle ein Auto leisten konnten. Der Ölpreisschock weckte noch kein schlechtes Gewissen, wenn man mit dem Auto zum Kauf von Zigaretten ums nächste Eck fuhr.

Viertausend Schilling reichten meist für einen fahrbaren Untersatz. Er wurde mit Polyesterharz und Farbe für die technische Überprüfung tauglich gemacht, mit Rallyestreifen, Nebelscheinwerfern und Kippschaltern aufgemotzt, um am letzten Tag des Überziehungszeitrahmens entsorgt und durch die nächste "Schüssel" ersetzt zu werden. Man nahm, was der Gebrauchtwagenmarkt bot, vom Fiat 850 bis zum Renault 4, vom Opel Kadett bis zum Ford Escort oder vom 504er Peugeot bis zum 142er Volvo. Auto zu fahren war ein unbeschwertes Vergnügen, aber auch ein Stück Individualismus und Identitätsstiftung.

Jeder Wagen blieb mit Ereignissen des Lebens verbunden, mit erfüllter oder unerfüllter Liebe, mit Arbeit, Urlaub, Umzug oder Freundschaft. So bringen die Erinnerungen an die Autos von damals auch die Emotionen der Siebziger zurück. Die Autos erschienen nicht erst ab der Oberklasse unverkennbar. Man hatte noch Großeltern, die ein Leben ohne Auto für lebenswert hielten. Man hatte schon Eltern, die innerhalb der Familie für ein Minimum von einem Kraftfahrzeug pro Person sorgten. Man spielte Autoquartett und war ein Fan von Jochen Rindt. Man hatte auf Fahrrädern und Mopeds von Puch oder KTM erste Möglichkeiten individueller Mobilität ausgelotet. Man wollte schnell sein oder wenigstens schnell aussehen. Man hatte keine Idee, wie es sich anfühlen könnte, einmal sechzig zu sein und auf diese Zeit zurückzublicken, die nicht bloß in der eigenen Biografie, sondern in der Menschheitsgeschichte völlig einzigartig dasteht.
