Bremelanotide does not act on the vascular system but instead activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, increasing sexual function. This peptide is therefore a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring hormone alpha-MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone). Its chemical structure is a cyclic heptapeptide analog. Clinical studies of suitable melanocortin receptor (MC4R) agonists appear to confirm that this pathway is a useful target for modulating human sexual function.
