Telefoto medium unik yang dirancang untuk pemotretan close-up, EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM dari Canon adalah seri-L prime yang sangat cocok untuk pemotretan detail tinggi dengan jarak kerja yang nyaman. Untuk aplikasi makro, lensa ini memberikan pembesaran maksimum 1:1 seukuran aslinya bersama dengan jarak pemfokusan minimum 1,6', namun panjang fokusnya yang panjang juga ideal untuk potret wajah dan kebutuhan pemotretan jarak menengah lainnya yang dipotong pendek.

Berkenaan dengan desain optiknya, tiga elemen dispersi ultra-rendah digunakan untuk mengontrol penyimpangan warna dan fringing warna dan lapisan Super Spectra telah diterapkan untuk mengurangi flare dan ghosting. Memanfaatkan aset ini adalah sistem fokus mengambang internal yang berfungsi untuk menjaga kualitas gambar di seluruh rentang fokus.

Motor Ultrasonik digunakan untuk memberikan kinerja fokus otomatis yang cepat dan senyap, bersama dengan fokus manual penuh waktu, dan fungsi Pembatas Fokus juga membantu memastikan kecepatan fokus yang cepat. Selain itu, lensa ini tahan cuaca untuk digunakan dalam mencoba kondisi lingkungan dan memiliki kerah tripod berputar yang dapat dilepas agar bermanfaat bekerja di atas tripod atau monopod.
