This virtual workshop is taught by CBA instructor Beth Sheehan.

Unlock the fascinating world of the decorative paper technique known as paste paper from the comfort of your own home in this hands-on course where you'll learn various exercises, concepts, and skills to create stunning paste paper designs. We will dive into the art of pattern creation, color blending, and texture manipulation as you experiment with different tools and techniques. Our discussions will also focus on the versatility of paste paper and its applications in bookbinding, mixed media art, and more. Develop your artistic eye and leave the workshop with a collection of unique paste paper creations, ready to elevate your creative projects.

We will start the course with a brief introduction to paste paper and its historical significance, then discuss a few key aspects of color theory and color blending techniques. Participants will explore pattern design and composition as they master different paste application techniques and experiment with texture manipulation using various tools. Additionally, through the incorporation of elements such as stencils and stamps, participants will be able to enhance their designs even further!

Required Materials:

• Wheat paste
• Paper
• Acrylic paint
• Brushes and tools for making patterns

About the Instructor

Beth Sheehan is a printmaker, papermaking, and book artist living in Chicago, IL.

Her work investigates ideas of memory and perception to explore her own lack of episodic memory.

Sheehan’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Center for Book Arts, and the San Francisco Public Library.

She has worked as a professional printer at Durham Press in Pennsylvania and at Harlan and Weaver in New York. She was also the Lead Binder and Bindery Manager at Small Editions in Brooklyn and teaches paper, print, and book workshops around the country.
