🌿 Some plants are beautiful. The Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale Mint’ is something else entirely. With leaves sculpted from jade and hammered metal — deeply textured, dramatically veined, and washed in a rare mint variegation that shimmers in the light — this is a plant that stops people mid-sentence. A true collector’s specimen that combines prehistoric drama with ethereal beauty.

  • Botanical Name: Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale Mint’
  • Common Names: Dragon Scale Mint Alocasia, Dragon Scale Alocasia
  • Origin: Tropical rainforests of Borneo
  • Pot Size: 4” Nursery Pot
  • Rarity: Extremely rare chimeric variegation — no two leaves are identical

What Makes It So Special?

The standard Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ is already one of the most coveted houseplants in cultivation — prized for its extraordinary leaf texture that genuinely resembles the scales of a mythical dragon, with deep silvery-green veining pressed into a dark, lustrous surface. The ‘Mint’ variant introduces a rare chimeric mutation: sections of pale mint-green, cream, and soft jade that contrast dramatically with the deep base color. No two leaves carry the same pattern. Each new leaf is a surprise.

🌱 Care Guide

☀️ Light

Bright indirect light for 6–8 hours daily. An east or north-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct harsh sun (scorches variegated tissue) and deep shade (causes reversion to green and slows growth). More light = more variegation.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly every 7–10 days in spring/summer, every 10–14 days in fall/winter. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Use filtered or rainwater — the variegated tissue is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine. Never let the plant sit in standing water.

💦 Humidity & Temperature

Requires high humidity — 65–85% ideal, minimum 60%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants. Keep temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Never below 60°F. Avoid cold drafts, AC vents, and heating vents.

🌱 Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, airy mix: 40% potting mix + 30% perlite + 20% orchid bark + 10% worm castings. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Repot every 1–2 years in spring, going up only one pot size at a time.

🌿 Fertilizing

Feed every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Do not fertilize in fall or winter. Flush soil with plain water every 2–3 months to prevent salt buildup.

🌙 Understanding Dormancy

Alocasias may drop leaves in winter or when conditions change — this is normal dormancy, not death. The corm remains alive underground. Reduce watering, maintain warmth and humidity, and new growth will emerge when conditions improve, typically in spring.

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Pet & Child Safety: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
  • Variegation: Each plant is unique — variegation pattern will vary from the photos shown.
  • Availability: Extremely limited. Due to the chimeric nature of this plant, supply is always restricted.
💡 Pro Tip: Watch for a tightly coiled spear emerging from the center of the plant — that’s a new leaf on its way. Each unfurling is an event, and with the Dragon Scale Mint, every new leaf is a completely unique work of art.

I like this brush
Style: Medium Dog, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I'd used the thumb brush, the slanted brush and a human soft-bristled toothbrush on my dog over the course of four years. I hate those thumb silicone brushes because my fingers are slim so it slides everywhere. The slanted one is cool. But I got so used to being able to use this collection of human soft-bristled toothbrushes that I'd gotten from the dentist. This one felt weird at first. My dog didn't really understand what I was putting in her mouth and jerked back. We'd gotten a system down for how far back to go so I wasn't knocking her gums and held her jaw out to see her teeth. It's weird not having to do that anymore. I like the brush now. It's a little pricier than other dog toothbrushes. I think if I hadn't used human toothbrushes (and gotten so many compliments from dog vets who didn't know that was what I was using), I would've started off with this one. I'll probably use it again after the three months. Not sure yet.

Low cost buy to put off big costs later
Style: Big Dog, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
These came recommended to us by our veterinary dentist. The bristles are soft and hold up great even with daily use on multiple dogs (they each now have their own toothbrush). It definitely doesn’t beat a yearly cleaning, but it helps prevent oral issues.

The best toothbrush, and I've tried them all!
Style: Small Dog, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I have a little 4 year old Maltese and Shih Tzu mix. She has very tiny teeth that are already starting to show signs of dental disease. I know it's important that they get brushed because small breed dogs are more prone to dental and gum problems. But I've tried every little toothbrush out there and it's a battle trying to brush her teeth. And unfortunately she usually wins! This brush is the best. It is soft and round and she completely tolerates it. I put a little doggie toothpaste on it, which she likes the taste of, and I'm finally able to at least move the brush and paste around her gum line. She still fights me a bit, but nothing like she used to. I would highly suggest that you give this toothbrush a try.

Flimsy and snapped easily
Style: Big Dog, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Snapped in literally under a minute of using it. The toothbrush head is so small and the handle is really thin and flimsy even though it’s advertised for large dogs… I’m so disappointed.
