A flying fish, captured in this shot by Anouska Freedman, preparing to take to the air. Ripples in the calm waters give a good resemblance of a rock skipped on water. However, if you take a closer look, you will actually see the wavy pattern made by the fish’s tail to help boost it to ‘fly.’ This particular shot has a great angle at almost exactly 45 degrees from the base to just the off-center of the frame. With the blue oceanic waters serving as a runway and producing a tiny wake of water only this extraordinary fish can produce.

Flying fish can’t actually fly, but they can glide through the air for as far as 400m if the conditions are right. They usually take flight away from marine predators, but they also have the ability to rapidly dive down back to water to avoid the aerial ones like a cormorant.
