Audio-Technica AT-LP70X Fully Automatic Belt-Drive Turntable at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The AT-LP70X is a fully automatic belt-drive turntable from Audio-Technica (Tokyo, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Positioned as a meaningful step up from the AT-LP60X, the AT-LP70X centres its performance advantage on the integrated AT-VM95C Dual Moving Magnet cartridge, a genuine audiophile-grade cartridge compatible with the full VM95 Series stylus range from conical through to Shibata. The turntable plays both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records, features a J-shaped tonearm with less than 2.0 degrees of tracking error, and includes a built-in switchable phono preamplifier delivering 252 mV at line level. A three-piece anti-resonance chassis and external AC adapter further reduce noise, and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches greater than 55 dB (DIN-B), measurably better than the AT-LP60X series. Available in Black/Silver, Black/Bronze, and White/Silver.

AT-VM95C Cartridge and VM95 Series Stylus Compatibility

The AT-VM95C is Audio-Technica's entry point in the VM95 Series, a family of Dual Moving Magnet cartridges that share a common body and accept interchangeable stylus assemblies. The cartridge is permanently integrated into the AT-LP70X's headshell and cannot be removed, but its stylus is fully user-replaceable without tools. The standard ATN-VMN95C conical stylus delivers a nominal output of 4.0 mV at 1 kHz with excellent channel separation and low distortion. As the listener's tastes develop, the stylus can be upgraded through the VM95 Series to the VMN95E elliptical, VMN95EX, VMN95ML micro-linear, or VMN95SH Shibata profiles, each offering progressively finer groove contact, improved detail retrieval, and lower record wear. This upgrade path is unique among turntables at this price point and gives the AT-LP70X long-term relevance well beyond its category. The 220 mm J-shaped tonearm provides an 18 mm overhang and keeps tracking error angle below 2.0 degrees across the record surface.

Three-Piece Anti-Resonance Chassis, J-Tonearm, and External AC Adapter

The AT-LP70X's three-piece chassis construction isolates the platter and motor assembly from the tonearm base and output electronics, reducing the transfer of structural vibration into the stylus and signal chain. Audio-Technica notes this as a deliberate improvement over the single-piece chassis of the AT-LP60X. The die-cast aluminum platter with felt mat provides a stable, low-resonance playing surface, while the DC motor drives the belt with consistent torque. Fully automatic operation handles tonearm placement, lowering, and return at the press of the start or stop button, and a manual tonearm lift lever allows the listener to cue specific tracks without triggering the full automatic sequence. A tonearm lock protects the stylus during transport. The external AC adapter moves AC/DC conversion outside the chassis to isolate power supply noise from the signal path, contributing to the AT-LP70X's >55 dB signal-to-noise performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Audio-Technica AT-LP70X?

The Audio-Technica AT-LP70X is a fully automatic belt-drive turntable featuring an integrated AT-VM95C Dual Moving Magnet cartridge, a three-piece anti-resonance chassis, and a built-in switchable phono preamplifier. It plays 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records with a J-shaped tonearm maintaining less than 2.0 degrees of tracking error, and achieves a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 55 dB. The AT-VM95C stylus is user-replaceable and compatible with the full Audio-Technica VM95 Series, enabling upgrades to elliptical, micro-linear, or Shibata profiles over time.

How does the AT-LP70X compare to the AT-LP60X or the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO?

The AT-LP70X improves on the AT-LP60X in three measurable ways: the AT-VM95C cartridge delivers higher output (4.0 mV versus 2.5 mV) with better channel separation; the signal-to-noise ratio improves from greater than 50 dB to greater than 55 dB; and the three-piece anti-resonance chassis replaces the single-piece AT-LP60X body for reduced structural resonance. Both turntables are fully automatic with built-in phono preamps. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO is a manual turntable without an onboard preamp, requiring a separate phono stage, amplifier, and speakers before any audio is produced; it offers a superior tonearm and higher-resolution cartridge options but demands more setup investment and hands-on operation. The AT-LP70X is the better choice for listeners who want improved performance over the AT-LP60X with the same ease of use.

Can the AT-VM95C cartridge be replaced or upgraded?

The AT-VM95C cartridge body is permanently integrated into the AT-LP70X headshell and cannot be removed or swapped for a different cartridge. However, the stylus assembly is fully user-replaceable and compatible with every stylus in the Audio-Technica VM95 Series: AT-VMN95C conical (stock), AT-VMN95E elliptical, AT-VMN95EX, AT-VMN95ML micro-linear, and AT-VMN95SH Shibata. Each upgrade improves groove contact geometry, detail retrieval, and record preservation. This is an unusual level of stylus upgrade flexibility for a turntable at this price point.

What is the difference between a conical and an elliptical stylus tip?

A conical stylus tip makes a single rounded contact point with the groove walls, which is forgiving of minor tracking misalignment and durable in everyday use. An elliptical tip is narrower in the groove-tracking plane, allowing it to follow higher-frequency groove modulations more accurately for improved treble extension, lower distortion, and reduced record wear per play. Upgrading the AT-LP70X from the stock AT-VMN95C conical to the AT-VMN95E elliptical is one of the most cost-effective performance improvements available on this platform.

Does the AT-LP70X work with powered speakers directly?

Yes. The AT-LP70X includes a built-in switchable phono preamplifier with RIAA equalization and 36 dB of gain, producing a 252 mV line-level output that connects directly to any powered speaker or amplifier with a standard RCA or aux input. No external phono stage is required. For setups that include a receiver or integrated amplifier with a dedicated phono input, the internal preamp can be switched off so the 4.0 mV phono-level signal feeds the external stage instead. The included dual RCA cable includes a grounding wire for use with phono inputs to eliminate hum.

How does fully automatic operation work on the AT-LP70X?

Pressing the start button at 33-1/3 or 45 RPM causes the tonearm to lift from its locked rest position, travel to the record's lead-in groove, lower onto the vinyl, and begin tracking automatically. At the end of the record side, the tonearm lifts, returns to its rest, and the platter stops. A manual tonearm lift lever is also available for cueing individual tracks without initiating the full automatic sequence. A tonearm lock secures the arm when the turntable is not in use or during transport.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
