The Blackmagic Design Spares - ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K - Mezzanine PCB (often abbreviated as the Mezz Board) is a specialized secondary circuit board that sits on top of the Main PCB.

In the 4K version of the TV Studio Pro, the processing requirements for 12G-SDI are significantly higher than the HD model. The Mezzanine board acts as an "expansion" layer, typically housing the high-speed 12G-SDI input/output drivers and the additional FPGA processing required for Ultra HD (2160p60) frame rate conversion and re-syncing.

Core Responsibilities

  • 12G-SDI Interface: Manages the physical 8 inputs of the 4K model. Unlike the HD version, all inputs here are 12G-SDI (no HDMI inputs), and this board handles that massive data throughput.

  • Standards Conversion: Houses the hardware responsible for the "Standards Conversion" feature on every input, allowing you to plug in any format (720p, 1080i, 2160p) and have it automatically match the switcher's set resolution.

  • Signal Distribution: Routes the processed 4K video feeds down to the Main PCB for effects (DVE, Keying) and back up for final Program/Multiview output.

When to Replace the Mezzanine PCB

Because the Mezzanine board handles the physical SDI connections, it is often the first "line of defense" and the first thing to fail due to external electrical issues.

  • Input-Specific Failures: If specific SDI ports (e.g., Inputs 1-4) stop seeing signal while the software and buttons still work, the SDI receiver chips on the Mezzanine board are likely damaged.

  • 12G-SDI Signal Integrity: The unit works fine in 1080p, but the signal "flickers" or drops out entirely when you switch the project to 4K/UHD.

  • "No Input" across all ports: If every SDI input shows "Black" in the Multiview, but the Media Pool graphics still work, the communication bridge between the Mezzanine and Main PCB has likely failed.

  • Physical Port Damage: If an SDI BNC connector is snapped or sheared off the board, replacing the Mezzanine PCB is often faster and more reliable than trying to solder a new high-frequency BNC connector back onto the multi-layer board.

Technical Installation Note

Repair Level: 4 (Advanced). 1. The "Sandwich" Design: The Mezzanine board is connected to the Main PCB via high-density "board-to-board" connectors (stiff pins or Hirose-style headers). You must lift the board perfectly vertically to avoid bending these pins.

2. BNC Alignment: When installing the new board, you must align all 8+ SDI ports with the holes in the back metal chassis simultaneously. It is a tight fit; do not force it, or you may crack the PCB traces.

3. Thermal Management: Because 12G processing generates intense heat, the Mezzanine board often has its own thermal pads that contact the chassis or a dedicated heatsink. Never reuse old thermal pads. 4. Static Sensitivity: This board contains extremely sensitive high-speed logic. Always use an ESD wrist strap. A single static pop to an SDI center pin during installation will "brick" the new board.

Diagnostic Tip: Mezz vs. Main

How do you know which board is dead?

  • It's the Mezzanine Board if: You have no SDI inputs, but the switcher connects to your computer, the Multiview UI appears on your monitor, and the buttons light up.

  • It's the Main Board if: The unit won't boot, won't connect to the network, or the Multiview output itself is dead.

Expert Advice: If you are losing inputs, check your cables and "hot-plugging" habits. 12G-SDI is sensitive to "ground loops." If your cameras and switcher aren't on the same power phase, you can send a voltage spike down the SDI cable that fries the Mezzanine board's input protection diodes.

Are you seeing specific inputs failing, or is the entire SDI bank unresponsive?

Issues with mounting the shelves, big time
Color: Brown, Size: 55.1"W x 10.3"D x 1.8"H, Set of 2
I bought the 55 inches floating shelves. I have an area above my linen cabinet that I wanted to utilize for storage and books in my hall. I did my measuring, figured out spacing. Marked everything off to do 3 total shelves (bought two boxes). A couple of spots screwed into a stud, and the others I had to install the plastic mount things. I had used those before so I just did the predrill then tapped them in, finished off by screwing the mount flush with the wall. I grabbed the first bracket and decide to start with a screw that had one of the inset mount things (sorry the correct term is escaping me). It never once occurred to me to check that the plastic mount and screw would not work. We’ll surprise! I tried and tried to get the screw to screw thru the mount, the mount is the rigid plastic thoe that is supposed to split when the screw goes through. Well something wasn’t engineered properly on the mounts cuz they would not thread a screw. They would not split. I even went into my garage and tried different screws I had to see if maybe it was just too big…or something. Then I started just prying it apart and could not get it to split like it’s supposed to, the tip piece broke off before the piece split. I have never had this situation before. I now have a bunch of these, that leave huge holes in my wall, where I measured out for a shelf to go. I’m not a huge DIYer so now I’m trying to figure out if I can salvage this situation but I’m afraid that if I get different mounts they will be too small for the already created holes, or they will fit the hole but because it’s screwing into dry wall, the drywall already has threads from the other mount, will it strip if the threads aren’t 100% the same. Oooooor am I going to have to patch up and paint that wall, then buy new mounts and attempt to try again….which I will now have to set the shelves at a different height so I don’t screw into the same holes I patched since I don’t trust them…..ugh. I practically want to cry. lol. So if I could give this negative stars I would! I feel stupid due to these having such great reviews by others. Comments of how easy they were to install. I will also mention that a few others mentioned the metal bracket that is mounted to the wall then the shelf slide onto is very flimsy. I could bend it side to side with my hands. The only reason I decided it would be ok is that there are a total of 8 screws in the mount, figured it would be stable enough.

Decent Quality. Look Great
Color: Brown, Size: 35.7"W x 10.3"D x 1.8"H, Set of 2
These are easy to install and the shelf has a good quality look. The only thing lacking is the quality of the bracket. The arms are thin metal and I feel like it won’t hold much weight.

Great quality and easy install
Color: White, Size: 55.1"W x 10.3"D x 1.8"H, Set of 1
Great quality. Very easy install. Mounted mine above my fireplace to create a mantel. Looks like it was there from the day the apartment was built. So far it has held a good bit of weight with heavy ceramic decor and one very fat cat jumping up on it lol.
