Basketball is the world's second most popular sport. So why did it never take off in Britain? It could have been so different. Thirty years ago basketball was the flagship sport of Channel Four television - awash with marketing, millionaires and Man Utd.

Within five years, it had all gone wrong. Amidst the chaos, British basketball acquired its strangest ever national champions. How this happened is part of the history of basketball, of Brunel University, and the Britain of the 1980's

A Britain where attitudes towards work and money were revolutionised, confused and ultimately discarded. Just like basketball itself.

About an Author

John Kirkland is the world's most unlikely basketball impresario. Never young, he spent his youth worrying about politics, the environment and Rotherham United football club.

He then spent an astonishing eighteen years at university, including seven worrying about his doctorate, before settling into a mildly respectable academic career.

Now Deputy Secretary-General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, he has a quarter of the world to worry about. He has never written a sports book before, and may never be allowed to again.

Hyena Proof
Color: Acorn - Large, Size: Large
I have an American Bulldog that would chew a brick if he didn’t have an alternative lying around. They won’t last forever (nothing does) but we’ve had two of these over the course of a year and for him that is nothing short of a miracle. And that is daily chewing like it’s his job. I highly recommend the Acornucopia for aggressive chewers with jaws like hyenas…so it’s probably great for your dog too.

This is an awesome product and affordably priced! I'll buy more in the future!
Color: Comet - Small, Size: Small
This is a great ball for my dog Polly! It doesn't stink or have any weird oils on the ball. It is definitely durable. It has a nice chirping sound and it's great exercise for my dog's jaws. It's not too bouncy and it's the perfect weight that she feels satisfied having in her mouth and when she catches it in mid-air. It's not too heavy that I have to worry about it knocking her teeth out. I almost cancelled the order after I found out the size of the ball, I thought it was a larger ball that Bark makes. It turns out it is larger than a tennis ball which is what I wanted. Someone gave us a black, knobby, ball that is 12.5 inches in diameter and she absolutely loves it, it's her favorite ball. It's the perfect size for her American Pit Bull mouth! I cannot find this product anywhere or a comparable alternative that's the same size. If you know where I can purchase another ball that I've described @ 12.5 in. diameter, please let me know! I'll likely buy this ball that was just delivered, today, in the future, if it's not discontinued! It's a great deal for only $14.99!! Thanks from a happy satisfied customer, V.B.

Sort of good for tough chewers??
Color: Deep Roots Carrot - Small, Size: Small Dog
The actual carrot part (orange part) is tough chewer approved and my dog loves. It’s basically the same shape and size as his kong. However the leaves (green part) is not tough chewer approved. He ripped ALL those leaves off and ate them within 5 minutes of me giving him the toy. However they passed through him fine.
