Edgecombe County was formed during a transitional time when Earl Granville was moving forward with his allocation of his 1/8 part of the ÒCarolinas.Ó Formed in 1741, from Bertie Co., it became the Òwestern frontier.Ó Before that time, the western boundary of the state was Bertie to the north (running along VA line), Craven in the central part, and Bladen in the south running along SC line. Then in 1746, Granville Co. was formed out of the western part of Edgecombe. The county was continually reduced in size, beginning with the formation of Halifax (1758), Nash (1777), and Wilson (along with other counties) in 1855. It is rare, but before Orange Co., was formed, grants and other land transactions appear in Edgecombe Ð until Granville Co. was formed.
