The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in AmericaIt didn't occur to me until fairly late in the work that I was writing a book about the beginnings of a national celebrity culture. By 1860, a few boxers had become heroes to working class men, and big fights drew considerable newspaper coverage, most of it quite negative since the whole enterprise was illegal. But a generation later, toward the end of the century, the great John L. Sullivan of Boston had become the nation's first true sports

It didn't occur to me until fairly late in the work that I was writing a book about the beginnings of a national celebrity culture. By 1860, a few boxers had become heroes to working-class men, and big fights drew considerable newspaper coverage, most of it quite negative since the whole enterprise was illegal. But a generation later, toward the end of the century, the great John L. Sullivan of Boston had become the nation's first true sports celebrity, an American icon. The likes of poet Vachel Lindsay and novelist Theodore Dreiser lionized him--Dreiser called him 'a sort of prize fighting J. P. Morgan'--and Ernest Thompson Seton, founder of the Boy Scouts, noted approvingly that he never met a lad who would not rather be Sullivan than Leo Tolstoy.--from the Afterword

Praise for the first edition--

Gorn is an adventurous historian with a talent for informed speculation. He has written an exciting narrative history of boxing and then gone a step further to ask a series of questions that extend his focus to the whole of nineteenth-century American culture.--The Nation

Gorn combines colorful, witty, powerful narrative with enormously sophisticated analytical rigor, and the result is a book that anyone remotely interested in America's nineteenth century should read.--Virginia Quarterly Review

Gorn's finely conceived and craftsmanlike book catches the spirit of a young nation rushing to industrialization and how prize fighting was affected by, and came to reflect, much of the national mood and character. The Manly Art is first-rate social history rendered in felicitous prose.--Chicago Sun-Times

The Manly Art is an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century American culture. Writing with clarity, vigor, and grace, Gorn combines detailed narrative with convincing interpretations. He offers the reader a judicious selection of quotations from the sporting press that capture the drama, sensuality, and brutality of the ring and its craftsmen.--The Journal of American History

Elliott J. Gorn's The Manly Art tells the story of boxing's origins and the sport's place in American culture. When first published in 1986, the book helped shape the ways historians write about American sport and culture, expanding scholarly boundaries by exploring masculinity as an historical subject and by suggesting that social categories like gender, class, and ethnicity can be understood only in relation to each other. This updated edition of Gorn's highly influential history of the early prize rings features a new afterword, the author's meditation on the ways in which studies of sport, gender, and popular culture have changed in the quarter century since the book was first published. An up-to-date bibliography ensures that The Manly Art will remain a vital resource for a new generation.

Not the same rubber.
I just received these today. I already have two of the same size direct from the local pet store. The one thing I liked about them that made me want to buy more - my 13lb dog could chew on them all night and never leave a mark. The red one I received was as expected. The blue one I received was not made out of the same rubber. It was softer. We played catch a few times and it didn’t bounce the same. I looked away for 5 minutes and she had it already starting to shred. Not sure what happened but 1 of the 2 balls I was sent was not up to par, possibly defective.

Our Two year-old Great Pyrenees rescue loves her Lambchop. She’s fairly gentle with it, but it did accidentally rip so we had replace it since she loves it so much. No fault of the product. The product is very well made, She just got a little rough with it.

We <3 big lambchops
Style: White, Size: 24" Jumbo, Style: White, Size: 24" Jumbo
These are my vizsla's absolute FAVORITE toy. I mean, she doesn't leave the room without bringing at least one. We've bought several of these exact toys now and they're surprisingly durable- we've even put a few through the laundry. She loves to snuggle, nibble, and carry this toy like a security blanket. These are the big ones, so they get a little discolored from her grabbing them around the belly. The squeakers are pretty few and far between so it's generally not noisy unless she's super bored or excited. Get it, your dog will love it and they're cheaper than some of the small ones.

A Classic Toy My Dog Can’t Get Enough Of!
Style: Blue Birthday Hat, Size: 10.5"
The Multipet Lamb Chop Dog Plush Toy (10.5”, Cream) is an absolute winner in our house! This adorable, nostalgic plush is just as cute as it is entertaining, and my dog fell in love with it the moment it came out of the package. Super Soft & Cuddly The material is extra plush and velvety, making it perfect for dogs who love to snuggle. It feels well-made and not scratchy like some cheaper toys. Squeakers That Keep Dogs Engaged There are multiple squeakers inside, and they’re loud enough to keep your dog excited but not obnoxious. My pup carries it around proudly and squeaks it nonstop. Great Size The 10.5” size is ideal for both small and medium to large dogs. Big enough to cuddle, small enough to toss around easily. Durable for a Plush Toy While it’s not built for heavy destroyers (no plush toy truly is), it holds up surprisingly well to daily play and lots of shaking. Overall: The Multipet Lamb Chop is a fantastic combo of cuddly plush and squeaky fun. Perfect for fetch, snuggles, or as your dog’s new favorite companion. If your dog enjoys plush toys, this is definitely one to grab. Highly recommended! 🐑🐶💛
