L-Carnitine supplement for increased  fitness and endurance for working and sporting dogs

A dog that takes part in high demand activities or indeed any long period of work calling for stamina and energy may find its natural system for producing the chemical L-Carnitine unable to keep up with demand.

L-Carnitine is an amino acid like compound produced naturally in the dog’s liver and kidneys which is then transported through the bloodstream to muscle cells. There it converts fat reserves to sugars whose metabolism then releases energy and stimulates muscle action and growth

A temporary deficit of L-Carnitine can lead to reduced energy and symptoms of fatigue and slow recovery time or the inability to develop stronger muscle power despite exercise and training

Ingredients

Stamina Plus contains 400mg/ml of L-Carnitine and 100mg/ml of Magnesium Aspartate Hydrochloride

Feeding

This liquid is given orally, preferably twice daily, to increase stamina and performance. It can be easily added to feed or introduced directly into the dog’s mouth.

It can be fed long-term as part of the dog’s maintenance regime or given for specific times when an extra challenging day is expected. In the latter case, be advised that the L-Carnitine present in Stamina Plus takes approximately 3 hours to reach its maximum benefit and stays at that level for a further 3 hours before gradually diminishing in its effect.

As with the other products, daily usage is calculated according to the dog’s bodyweight and the daily feeding level is 1-2 ml per 10kg (22lbs) of bodyweight twice daily.

Science

What is L-Carnitine?

L-Carnitine is small peptide/amino acid that is essential in all animals for the production of energy. Carnitine is needed by the body for the metabolism of fatty acids into energy in the cells. It helps the body utilize fat for conversion into energy while maintaining the lean muscle mass, which helps reduce the overall body fat. It may also help decrease the levels of cholesterol and lipids (fats) in the blood.

Because L-Carnitine is essential in the process of converting fatty acids into energy a deficiency may result in increased fat storage, decreased performance, and, potentially, an increased risk of heart disease. A temporary deficit of L-Carnitine can lead to reduced energy and symptoms of fatigue and slow recovery time or the inability to develop stronger muscle power despite exercise and training.

The natural source of L-Carnitine is fresh meat and milk, however manufactured pet foods frequently contain less than 5% of the L-Carnitine of fresh meat. With the vast majority of pets being fed on manufactured diets, supplies of L-Carnitine in the diet are often insufficient. Synthesis in the body occurs mostly in the liver.

However skeletal and heart muscles, which use 95-98% of the supplies, cannot synthesise their own L-Carnitine and this explains why deficiency most commonly occurs in these tissues.

The dog in particular is a species predisposed to a deficiency of L-Carnitine. This is because there is a high level of L-carnitine excretion via the urine and very little re-absorption through the renal tubules.

Almost perfect...upraised logo should be left off
This toy is great for relentless chewers with strong jaws! It would be almost perfect if it didn't have a "K9" logo in raised rubber on it. That is the place that my aggressive chewer shepherd/bulldog mix focuses on and is able to get small chunks off. Without that logo, he would chew the ball more evenly, instead of fixating on that one spot. He loves this ball and has chewed on it for about an hour off & on each of the 11 days he has had it. Although it is very durable so far, the flaw is the upraised logo.

Perfect for High-Drive Dogs & Surprisingly Durable (six month review)
I use this ring ball for structured fetch and tug sessions with my high-drive German Shepherd mix (91 lbs. at 10 mon.), and it’s easily the best toy we’ve added to our routine. What makes it truly exceptional is how it allows my dog to engage in the full canine predatory sequence: • Chase: He locks in visually and bolts after the ring when I throw it. • Grab & Hold: He brings it back, pins it against my leg, and bites down firmly (the toy—not the leg!)—his way of acting out the natural catch-and-control behavior. • Unalive & Tug: We finish with a strong tug session, which satisfies his instinct to grip and shake—basically his version of “making the toy unalive.” • Settle & Chew: Afterward, he relaxes with a chew toy or eats—completing the full physical and mental cycle in a healthy, balanced way. Durability is outstanding—this toy stands up to intense tug sessions with no tearing or damage, even with a 91 lb powerhouse. My senior dog also joins in for double tug play, and it holds up beautifully to that too. I don’t leave this toy down for chewing—it’s not a chew toy. I use it specifically for fetch and tug, then put it away when we’re done. This keeps it exciting and extends its lifespan. My dog has other chew toys he can use freely throughout the day. This isn’t just another fetch toy—when thoughtful it provides a structured, instinct-satisfying experience that’s mentally enriching and physically engaging. If you have a high-drive or working breed, or a dog who thrives on interactive play, this ring ball is 100% worth it.

Unpredictable bounces
Size: Small, Size: Small
My 3-year old Cavapoo loves these little toys, although I haven’t given them to her all at once. Typically, she is able to chew a little hole in anything with a squeaker within hours. The first one I gave her, it took her more than a day to chew off a little ear, but she still love to play with it. The second one is completely intact after more than a week. What both of us like is that the shapes with tiny nubs make the toys bounce unpredictably. They are small and light-weight which makes them easy to throw in the house without doing any damage. I am careful to not throw them at the TV or delicate items. I’ll actually buy them again when she needs more toys. EDIT 3/19/2026: It’s 3.5 months since I first wrote about these toys. Tater is playing with all four critters. It’s a miracle that all of them are intact and squeaking! Even the one with an ear missing squeaks as long as I cover the little hole. I just added all of the Chiwawa toys to favorites so I can find them again—if or when these ever wear out.

Fun Bath Toy - Loud Squeaker
Size: Small
My dog loves these little squeaky toys. The squeaker is loud and the toy is very durable. She can chew on it and it still looks the same. We love to add them into the bathtub when it’s time for a bath to make her less stressed. She loves to bat them around the house. They roll around pretty well.

Good quality for the price, I’m very happy with this purchase.
Size: Small
They’re slightly smaller than a tennis ball, lightweight, and have a nice bounce. My dog is medium-sized (about 68 lbs) lab mix, and these work great for her. I’ve been looking for a toy like this for a long time. It’s made of soft rubber/silicone and squeaks with very little pressure, which is perfect for my dog. She loves to gently carry toys around the house and yard, and most squeaky toys require too much force. These are easy for her to squeak and just the right size to carry.
