A rare early 19th-century English flow blue hot plate in an early interpretation of the Willow pattern, circa 1820. Distinguished by its delicate butterfly medallion border, this example reflects a period before the pattern became fully standardized—making it especially appealing to collectors of early transferware.
Ingeniously designed with a hollow interior and side spout, the vessel was intended to be filled with hot water, allowing dishes placed above to remain warm during service. Such hot plates were considered a refined dining luxury in the Georgian era, blending practicality with decorative elegance.
The cobalt transfer retains strong saturation and depth, while the hand-applied glaze displays the soft variations and gentle bleeding prized in early flow blue. Unmarked, as is typical for pieces of this period.
