Deze op maat gemaakte nestkast met zinken dak biedt niet alleen de Koolmees maar ook de Pimpelmees, Ringmus, Huismus, Boomklever en Bonte Vliegenvanger een goede plek om in te nesten en om populaties van deze vogelsoort(-en) te behouden of weer terug te krijgen in een gebied. In de winter bewijst de nestkast vaak een goede dienst voor de vogels om te schuilen tegen het slechte weer. Dankzij de spiegel aan de binnenkant van de klep kan er meegekeken worden wat zich aan de binnenkant van de nestkast afspeelt.

Een juiste plaats om de kast op te hangen is een rustige en enigszins beschutte plaats, dus niet pal in de zon of op de regenzijde, met een vrije aanvliegroute voor de vogel. Het najaar is de beste tijd om de nestkast schoon te maken.
