Overdag staat ze in de winkel, ’s nachts heeft ze eindelijk tijd om te lezen in de boeken van onder andere Annie Ernaux en Pia Pera. Het is nooit te laat een droom te verwezenlijken. We lezen mee in het dagboek van Donati, die beschrijft hoe ze de boeken selecteert en een naam opbouwt. Maar al na een maand breekt er een brand uit in de winkel. Het is de steun van haar dorpsgenoten en jeugdvrienden die haar erbovenop helpt. Vloeiend en beeldrijk rijgt ze deze gebeurtenissen aaneen met dorpsverhalen, natuurbeschrijvingen en gedachten over de beste boeken, inspirerende auteurs en de meest memorabele personages. Langzaam maar zeker weet Donati iedereen te overtuigen: ze is een onervaren maar geboren en gepassioneerd boekverkoper.
