Het doel van Hot Potato! is eenvoudig: verzamel als eerste 10 punten door tactisch te spelen en je tegenstanders te slim af te zijn. Maar pas op, want de andere spelers zullen er alles aan doen om je dwars te zitten en zelf de overwinning binnen te halen.

Het spel draait om het tactisch spelen van Potato kaarten om Encounter kaarten te verslaan en punten te verdienen. Met elke kaart die wordt gespeeld, verandert de dynamiek van het spel, waardoor elke ronde weer anders is en spelers voortdurend op het puntje van hun stoel zitten.
