Explore the rich history of Australia’s involvement in the Great War with 'The Great War: Aftermath and Commemoration'. This authoritative book, published by NewSouth Publishing in 2019, delves deep into the legacy of World War I and its lingering effects on Australian society. Designed for history enthusiasts and scholars alike, the book offers a collection of thought-provoking essays from leading historians who dissect the complexities of war commemoration in contemporary Australia. As the centenary of the First World War approached, an 'Anzac revival' swept the nation, generating significant public discourse and spending on memorials and commemorations. This insightful text examines whether the prevailing narratives surrounding returning soldiers truly reflect their trauma, the experiences of Indigenous veterans, and the complex dynamics between Catholic and Protestant communities during and after the conflict.
Additionally, the book critiques how the Great War influenced Australia's national identity and its evolving role on the global stage following the Versailles Treaty. excellent
Format: Paperback
Detailed look at the many voter suppression efforts that target communities of color and the poor. The rationale is partisan and simple: a majority of the country doesn't agree with Republican politics. In order to stay in power, the GOP is using seemingly neutral laws that in reality disenfranchise many voters, particularly African Americans. The GOP has manufactured solutions in search of a problem, all in an effort to stop non-white people from voting. It's incredibly pernicious but Carol Anderson has written an excellent book pulling back the curtain on voter suppression.
