The hottest July on record was followed by a cool, rainy August, which unexpectedly had a positive impact on the vintage quality by slowing down ripening and extending the growing season. September was warm and dry. After early October rains, steep vineyards with high slate content dried quickly, preventing water retention and allowing noble rot to develop during two dry weeks that followed. This led to significant yield losses (about 35%) but increased sugar concentration in the grapes. To preserve the delicate, nuanced, and fruity Riesling character in this very ripe year, gentle grape processing was crucial. The aim was to capture the juiciness without emphasizing the botrytis. Wines with the highest Oechsle levels also maintained good acidity, preserving the classic Riesling character. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a prestigious vineyard site located downriver from Graach, featuring a south-southwest facing aspect and elevations between 110-260m above sea level. Named after a sundial built in 1842, the vineyard is characterized by weathered Devonian slate and clay soils, with steep slopes ranging from 45-75%. This terroir produces exceptional Rieslings known for their delicate, earthy character, slate minerality, exotic and peachy fruit notes, and profound elegance. Classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, this esteemed site exemplifies top-tier German viticulture. The estate owns a modest 0.25 hectares within Wehlener Sonnenuhr, contributing to the production of these highly refined wines.
