De uit Los Angeles afkomstige singer-songwriter Beth Hart, bekend om haar rauwe en krachtige blues-rock sound, verbindt haar expressieve vocalen met klassieke soul covers op Don't Explain, een album dat voortkwam uit haar vriendschap met gitarist Joe Bonamassa. Geproduceerd door Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes), bevat het album Hart's vurige interpretaties van tien cover songs, met Bonamassa op gitaar en zijn geweldige band die de nummers aanvult.

Bonamassa en Hart hadden elkaar op tour al vaak ontmoet, en speelden op veel van dezelfde festivals in Europa. In het begin van 2010, zag hij een show van haar in Londen -“It was killer,” zegt Bonamassa - en stelde voor om eens samen aan een project te werken.

Don't Explain kreeg vorm in dezelfde zomer toen Bonamassa zijn album Dust Bowl opnam in Santorini, Griekenland. “I was up late one night, I couldn’t sleep. I was playing songs on my iPod from the reissue of Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, which included all the opening acts from that Stones show,” herinnert hij zich. “As soon as the Ike & Tina Turner tracks came on, I just said out loud, ‘Beth Hart.’ I e-mailed Kevin, saying, ‘Let’s do a soul covers record with Beth,’ and he replied back, ‘Actually, that’s a great idea.’” Hart stemde ermee in, hoewel ze zegt, “When I first got the call from Joe about doing a soul record with me, I figured I’d be the background vocalist. He said, ‘No, you’re singing lead.”

Ze werkte samen met Bonamassa en Shirley aan de keuze van de nummers. De uiteindelijke setlist bevat nummers die wereldberoemd zijn geworden door artiesten als Billie Holiday (de titel track, “Don’t Explain”), Aretha Franklin (“Ain’t No Way”), Bill Withers (“For My Friend”), Ray Charles (“Sinner’s Prayer”), Delaney & Bonnie (“Well, Well,” featuring een vocaal duet met Bonamassa), Tom Waits (“Chocolate Jesus”), Etta James (“I’d Rather Go Blind” en “Something’s Got A Hold On Me”) en anderen.

“Beth has been an absolute hidden gem” zegt Bonamassa. “She has a beautiful voice. She’s a fantastic singer, a lovely person.” Don’t Explain explains it all.
