About the work
Roberto Cuoghi has generously presented Whitechapel Gallery with a series of four diptychs to support the future exhibition and education programme of the gallery. Each unique diptych contains two contrasting drawings in pencil, pastel and Tempera on Vellum paper, delicately pinned onto backdrops of foam and spunge materials. Each framed in a plywood box, the overall presentation of the diptych is unconventional and invites the viewer to contemplate the curious drawings that it contains.

About the artist
Roberto Cuoghi (b. 1973, Modena, Italy) is a multimedia artist working in painting, sculpture, digital animation, drawing, and sound. He is perhaps best known for his dramatic life choice, at age 24, where he physically altered his appearance to become a well-respected man in his sixties. That decision laid the groundwork for many of his works that explore issues surrounding transformation, time, memory, identity, and death. One of his most recent works, Šuillakku—corral version (2014), a large-scale sound installation that creates a hybrid between the music of non-Western and Western cultures and is inspired by the ancient Assyrian empire, was the subject of an exhibition at the New Museum in the spring 2014.
