Background
Human Interferon Beta (IFNβ) is a naturally occurring cytokine belonging to the type I interferon family, primarily produced by fibroblasts and immune cells in response to viral infections or other inflammatory stimuli. It plays a critical role in the innate immune response by binding to the IFNα/β receptor (IFNAR), activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, and inducing the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). These genes exert broad antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative effects. IFNβ has been widely utilized as a therapeutic agent, particularly in the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), where it helps reduce inflammation and modulate immune activity. Recombinant forms of IFNβ (e.g., IFNβ-1a and IFNβ-1b) are clinically approved and demonstrate efficacy in decreasing relapse rates and slowing disease progression. Key functions of IFNβ include: Antiviral Activity: Enhances cellular resistance to viral infections.
